How to apply for a TFN

November 30, 2022

Sven's guide to applying for a TFN

1. What is a TFN, and what is it used for?

A Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique identifier issued to individuals by the Australian Government. A TFN is required when you apply for benefits, open a bank account, or start a new job in Australia.

It's worth noting that anyone with access to your TFN—including government agencies and employers—can use your TFN to view the full range of information about you that the ATO holds. Given how vital your TFN is for managing tax and financial obligations and rights, keeping it safe and secure at all times is essential.

2. How do you apply for a TFN online or in person?

Applying for a Tax File Number (TFN) is a process that can be completed either online or in person. Regardless of your chosen approach, the first step is downloading and completing an Application for a TFN form from the Australian Taxation Office's website.

To apply online, visit the website of the Australian Tax Office and create an account by entering your personal information. If you prefer to apply in person, you can either visit your nearest office or post your application form directly to the office address detailed in your documentation.

3. What documents do you need to provide when applying for a TFN?

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) recommends that individuals provide three or more documents for identification when applying for a TFN.

  • The primary document should be something that verifies the person's name and date of birth, such as an Australian birth certificate, citizenship certificate or passport.
  • Secondary documents might include driver's licence details, Medicare card and current utility bills like electricity and gas bills.

Finally, someone making an application will also need to provide proof of their address like a bank statement, vehicle registration/lease papers or a residential lease agreement. All documents must be provided in original form with a photo ID, also included if verifying documents online. Providing the required items at application time can ensure an easy and efficient registration process when it comes to getting your TFN. With these necessary documents in hand, you'll be well on your way to streamlining your tax affairs sooner than you think!

4. How long does it take to receive a TFN once you've applied for it?

Once the application is approved and all necessary documentation has been provided, you can expect to receive your TFN within 21 days. However, if your information cannot be verified or additional documents are needed, the process may take longer. In some special circumstances (such as if your country of citizenship does not have an embassy in Australia), it may take up to 28 days for approval. Remember that once you have received your TFN, it is essential that you keep this confidential and only provide it to those who are authorised to access and store it. After all, safeguarding your individual details helps keep your finances secure and protected.
